This 1600 square foot home serves as a weekend getaway for a retired couple. Construction is fire-resistive: exterior soffits are cementitious board, vents are screened against embers and the site has been carefully thinned. Swales and check dams slow the surface flow; the disturbed areas were successfully revegated in one growing season.
A well was impossible due to a layer of bedrock. Two underground cisterns hold 3400 gallons of rainwater, this provides both domestic and radiant floor water. Solar thermal and PV bring this home to effectively net-zero energy consumption. This home participated in the USGBC NM 2012 GreenBuilt Tour.
